Special education is a personalized learning program designed to support students with unique needs. Eligibility for special education within a school setting is determined through an evaluation process. If a child is found eligible, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is created. The IEP outlines specific goals, modifications, and accommodations to help the child access their free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Special education teachers create specially designed instruction to help the student make progress on their IEP goals and objectives. The aim is to create an educational environment where every child can learn and thrive, regardless of their unique learning profile.

Families who have concerns about their student’s development or learning but are not sure whether a special education evaluation is needed may choose to participate in a Child Find screening. Screenings are brief, informal check-ins that can help identify a student’s strengths and areas that may need a closer look.

Child Find screenings are provided at no cost to families and may help determine whether additional support or a comprehensive special education evaluation should be considered. Current screening dates and information about scheduling are available on the Special Education section of the Omak School District website.

Families may choose to begin with a screening or may request a special education evaluation directly when they believe an evaluation is appropriate.
