COUNSELOR

Hello. I am Katie Abrahamson, School Counselor at East Omak Elementary. I have been a School Counselor for 11 years, three at East, working primarily with Elementary aged students. I believe that positive relationships are the cornerstone of any counseling/therapeutic relationship, and employ strategies such as Play Therapy and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) as well as Solution-focused tactics in my practice. I work a great deal with students with a traumatic or grief-laden background. However, school counseling is unlike the therapy one might get from a behavioral health agency. School Counseling is available to all students. It also comes in the form of fun school activities to build a feeling of community, community service projects, small groups, and whole classroom instruction in Bully Prevention and Social Emotional wellness. Together, we build skills for successful learning, living, and lifetime relationships. If a student needs more intense services than what is offered by me, I may refer him/her for therapeutic services from one of our school-based therapy services (OBHC and Tribal Behavioral Health).

My education is ongoing and includes an AA in Early Childhood Education, Bachelor’s Degree from WSU in Human Development specializing in Children and Adolescents, and a Master’s Degree from Capella U in Human Services and Counseling specializing in School Counseling.

I have three kids (two grown), and two grandsons. My hobbies include hiking, spending time with my family, friends, my dogs, riding horses, reading, and home improvement projects.

I am very privileged to be the Counselor at East Elementary and thank you for sharing your kids with me.

Warm wishes,

Ms. Katie
